Hornsey v The Stanmore Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 31 Aug 2002 at 1.00 pm
The Stanmore Cricket Club Lost 1 Wicket

Match report Of Stolen Stumps and All or Nothing.
Such is the nature of the game when it comes to the stark reality that the winners stay up and consign the vanquished to relegation. Unfortunately for us, we became the vanquished in a game that had more twists and turns than the Cresta Run.
The game starts with the Hornsey opening bowler presenting Sam with a mobile. "Hold on to this please, if it rings it means that my wife has gone in to labour" Two overs later, there is the tell tale ring. After a eternity, Stanmore skippers joy muted as Sam works out that it was a wrong number. Skippers gloom deepens as said bowler proceeds to bowl through the entire innings, taking wickets on a regular basis. Fortunately for us he was not related to the Chairman!
Stanmore proceed from being well placed on 130 for 5 to 142 all out, never mind, it's tea time.
Teams reappear after tea, to find that some local Walthamstow oiks has stolen the stumps. Chaos looms. Stanmore skipper beginning to think that we've got out of jail with an abandoned match when oppo captain turns up with some spring loaded stumps minus the springs. Engineer Ridgewell then gets them to stay upright with a selection of sweet wrappers, tissues and whatever else he could find in his pockets and the match restarts whilst a spare set of stumps are rushed over from Hornsey.
We bowl magnificently. Hornsey certianly didn't like it much, and despite us taking wickets regularly, Hornsey, after scoring most of the runs through the Slip region finally level the scores with two wickets in hand.
At times like these, a Captain needs his big men to come forward. No one did until Roger (I don't do second spells) Ball finally broke the silence and rose to the challenge. First ball, the number ten chipped it to cover. The next four ball's had the number 11 hopping about, and the sixth ball narrowly mised the leg stump. The Hornsey umpire gleefully sigals wide after being promted by their captain, who promptly to rescinds the decision after some kindly advice from Roger.
Next up is Asif who charges in. The ball is true, its's chipped back to the bowler who.........The rest is history.
A fantastic game of cricket that had everything, and one I shall remember for a very long time for any number of reasons.
