Brondesbury v The Stanmore Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 01 Jun 2002 at 11.30 am
The Stanmore Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Opening batsman Will Sellar hit a fine century for Brondesbury, who beat Stanmore by three wickets in a high-scoring match on Saturday but only after they had suffered a late shock as four wickets went for just four runs in a remarkable over by Dhammika Prassad.
Set a target of 244, Brondesbury were almost there at 239-3. Then Prassad, who played for Sri Lanka in the U19 World Cup, struck with avengeance. Matt Stein (44) and Ian Kidd (0) were bowled off successive deliveries, Nelson was run-out and Sellar was caught by wicketkeeper Navin Samarakoon.
However, in the next over, Hiten Parmar clinched victory for Brondesbury with ten balls to spare.
Samarakoon had played a magnificent innings for Stanmore. His 78, included ten fours and three sixes, as the ball was dispatched to all parts of the ground with power and perfect timing.
With Stanmore 60-4, skipper Glucka Wijesuriya (27) and Nick Goh (32) shared a half-century partnership. Then Wijesuriya fell to a tremendous diving catch by Nick Compton at mid-wicket, off James Hudson, who also took a fine catch to account for Goh. However, Samarakoon continued with his onslaught as Stanmore reached 243-9 declared (Jeff Hurrell 30, Stein 4-74, of 20 overs).
In reply, Sellar (113) and Tommy Simpson (33) had shared an opening stand of 105 for Brondesbury, who looked home and dried after Stein (44) helped Sellar add 74 for the fourth wicket. But Prassad almost had the last word.
Despite a superb century by Tom Simpson (103), Brondesbury lost to Richmond in a National Cup second round match on Monday.
After Brondesbury had scored 243-7 off their 45 overs, Richmond won by seven wickets. Their captain Richard Barlow (86) played a brilliant innings.
Stanmore have claimed a walkover after Folkestone failed to appear for a National Cup match at The Common on Sunday.
They expect to be at home to the winners of the Harrow vs Wimbledon clash in the third round on Sunday.
