Match report At last, on Tuesday 22 May in warm sunny conditions at Stanmore, a match that should have marked the halfway point of the league season was our first league outing. It was also the first game of the season for our visitors from Ickenham.
We won the toss and opted to bat first, making a steady if unspectacular start, scoring 30 for the first wicket before Hamesh was run out in a calling mix up in the seventh over. Greg Sumpter scored 23 before becoming the second victim, with the score on 54 in the eleventh over. Ickenham’s slower bowlers exercised some control over the scoring rate and we struggled to pick up more than ones and twos, finishing on 93 for 5 from our 20 overs.
There had to be a concern that we had not achieved a par score when our opponents reached 24 from the first four Stanmore overs, albeit losing one of their openers for a first ball duck to a tremendous catch from Thomas Stock off the bowling of Harry Wilcox.
The introduction of our spinners immediately turned the game in our favour. Raeman Banaik opening his account with a two wicket maiden, reduced Ickenham to 26 for 3 after six overs. Wickets fell regularly after that and you could see the confidence improving in our fielders as they applied pressure. The game came to an end in the 15th over when Nikhil Sood took the last two Ickenham wickets, cleaned bowled middle stump in consecutive deliveries leaving Ickenham all out on 43 from 14.3 overs.
We tried to put into practise lessons learned from our cup defeat at West Harrow and in training, cutting down on extras and sharpening up the fielding. Improvements were apparent but we will need to step up the performance for our next game against one of our main rivals in the league, Harrow St Mary.
